FYM REWIND: JOHN CARPENTER’S “THEY LIVE”

THEY LIVE is FYM’s number one choice for Sunday afternoon movie-viewing in October. John Carpenter’s prophetic story of a world controlled by an extraterrestrial mass media, seems to be eerily similar to this day and age. Maybe not the aliens part, but blatant media propaganda shoved into the consumer’s trough for mindless feeding/leading, is currently very evident.

WWF Wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper provides cult status heroism with classic (now pop culture staple) movie lines like- “I have come here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I’m all out of bubble gum.”

Carpenter’s bluesy 80’s soap opera soundtrack (composed by the director) provides sinister companion to the everyman’s town setting of They Live.

This movie is such a big deal that Shepard Fairey was so inspired by a scene in the movie that he ripped off the word in the scene (OBEY) and started his own propaganda design company.

They Live also features an epic 20min long fight scene between Piper and Keith David wrestling over putting on the special sunglasses (once on) are designed to expose the matrix-like world that is running human kind.

FYM Art Director Jesse Codling designed this THEY LIVE poster in honor of the upcoming October festivities. We hope you are inspired to revisit this film, or discover it for the first time. Check out THEY LIVE for free (legal) online HERE.

FYM ON THE LIST: ERASURE, FRANKMUSIK -LIVE AT THE MOORE THEATRE, SEATTLE USA 10.06.11

The last stop on Erasure’s 27 date North American tour (in promotion of their new album Tomorrow’s World -out tomorrow in the U.S.) ended in Seattle last Thursday night at The Moore Theatre. It was an sonic engagement full of surprises and exciting visual energy.

Producer and UK electro-pop leading man Frankmusik opened up the evening with an unstoppable performance of original dance floor anthems, sincere energy, and a few notable pop medley remixes.

In recent years Vincent James Turner (Frankmusik) has been climbing his way up the music industry ladder -starting as a beatboxer, worked with Island, then getting signed to Cherrytree Records (an imprint of Interscope Records) releasing a string of successful singles and producing the latest Erasure album Tomorrow’s World.

Frankmusik live came fully equipped with a backing band (drummer, and a keyboard/vocalist). He performed tracks off his September 2011 releaseĀ  Do It In The AM which paired exceptionally well with the vibe of the night. It was an all you could ask for dance party -and Frankmusik was personable enough to come out into the lobby after the show to do a meet and greet with fans and sign CD’s. See below for bonus photos.

Thursday night Erasure lived up to their grand over-the-top awesomely 80’s reputation with a stunning refresher course on what great pop music should be. Of course Erasure played crowd favorites from over the past three-decades which contributed to their 25 million plus in record sales. But it was a night of new beginnings that truly made their music shine.

After all these years Andy Bell continues to be a premiere showman live -his costume changing, body shaking persona danced up the night with talented backup beauties. The focus was on new material from Erasure’s 14th studio album Tomorrow’s World (out tomorrow).

Erasure indeed gave the crowd their money’s worth with incredible set design featuring a Gothic take on what tomorrow’s world could look like. Pictured above, Vince Clarke quietly commands attention producing his beats from a gargoyle perch.

Our highlight of the evening was hearing Erasure’s classic Always live along with formidable singles off the new record like -When I Start To (Break It All Down) and I Lose Myself.

The new tunes sound fresh and impressive -filled with personal undertones and catchy synthpop hooks. Paired with production help from Frankmusik, this latest record proves to be their strongest release in years! A special thanks goes out to both artists for giving us an entertaining night full of thunderous high-energy dancefloor bliss. FYM PRESS PLAY: SUCKERS • NEW ALBUM • CANDY SALAD • OUT 4.24.12

In 2010 buzzworthy Brooklyn indie rockers -SUCKERS released a record that at first listen FYM immediately connected with- Wild Smile. The album is a complete artistic statement, filled with soul-crushing sonic magnetism, refreshing approaches to double-edged vocal power and spine-tingling songwriting skills. FYM Seattle continues to keep Wild Smile in our weekly rotation, it never tires of simply being brilliant.

Out of respect to just how much we continue to love Wild Smile- FYM didn’t take writing a review of the SUCKERS follow-up lightly. Thanks to cool publicists we’ve been listening to Candy Salad in various states of consciousness over the past two weeks in order to really explore their latest release- out tomorrow, April 24th 2012.

The opening track -Nowhere is an expansive introduction into the world of Candy Salad. The jam is rich in soaring vocal harmonies, paired with whirling production flourishes (perfect for headphones) creating a digital-lantern lighting the way throughout the rest of our musical journey.

One thing that did standout to us at first listen -Candy Salad contains less raw, wailing falsetto vocal theatrics (which we absolutely loved on Wild Smile). Instead focusing on more reflective slow-burners, ideal for sun-squinting car rides on introspective Sundays.

But there’s still a nice variety of emotions explored throughout. For instance, Track 2 -Figure It Out, delivers a straight forward foot-stomping pop tune. Other album highlights include Turn On The Sunshine -a sexually-charged island rhythm goldmine, Chinese Braille’s soulful falsetto, the maze-like meditation that is Charmaine and Lydia (stay high). As a whole SUCKERS prove once again they have the ability to manifest a complete record worth listening to (over and over again).

This album isn’t better or worse than Wild Smile, instead it sits confidently beside -perhaps a little more stoned and heart-broken this time around, but still surrounded with refreshing music perspectives perfect for summer road-trips and late-night conversations contemplating past mistakes. SUCKERS play live in Seattle at Neumos via Capitol Hill -Sunday May 13th, 2012 -buy tickets HERE. They Live, Cheers FYM.
