FYM PREVIEW: BAND OF HORSES/ADMIRAL RADLEY AT THE GREEK THEATRE 9.24.10

While our Art Director Jesse Codling celebrates the big two-seven in Seattle, a 90 minute flight south to Berkeley the rest of us will be celebrating for him at Band of Horses and Admiral Radley. If there’s one thing that FYM knows will be amazing, it’s hearing one of the most epic songs of the past decade live: “The Funeral” by Band of Horses being heard in the best outdoor venue that the Bay Area has to offer at the Greek Theatre. Check out Ben Bridwell sans beard in this performance on Letterman.

Admiral Radley, who has been on our boy William Sellers’ radar for a while now, is opening the evening and “I Heart California” is working it’s best to get on our top 10 songs of the year right now. Follow along with the video to practice your sing-along when you catch them this Friday at the Greek Theatre. The show starts at 7pm with Darker My Love opening the whole gig.

FYM ON THE LIST: ADMIRAL RADLEY/BAND OF HORSES/THE GREEK THEATRE

Admiral Radley or as the white tape on the band’s gear refers to them as Ad Rad opened up before the Ford Edge supporting Band of Horses. Surprisingly enough, within the first few songs “I Heart California” came on! ( Our favorite tune!) Ad Rad’s drink of choice was confused to be red wine by singer Aaron Espinoza that Jason Lytle was drinking which happened to be chardonnay, Lytle said he was “Going John Tesh” with the drink.

In the meantime their drummer was puffing away on cigarettes and reached a point where his lighter stopped working. They put in a request for a lighter from the crowd and immediately got a couple lighters tossed at them, responding by saying “Careful what you wish for.”

At the start of their set the cigarette smoke confused our publicist- thinking it looked like there was a real smoke machine set up behind the band. Between songs ambient nature tunes played in the background, adding a relaxing atmosphere for the stoned Berkeley audience. The last time that Admiral Radley’s Aaron Espinoza was at the Greek Theater was for the Spin Doctors, and told the crowd to fess up to liking them. Jason Lytle went on to sing one of his songs letting us know that “This song is about one of the great loves of my life, skateboarding.” A few of their other tunes during their set was the slowjam that’s prefect for writing int text “I Left U Cuz I Luft U” along with “G N D N” that is short for goes nowhere does nothing. FYM can’t wait for a return to the Bay Area by Ad Rad, there’s just a few dates left with Band of Horses before they head over to Japan.

Band of Horses (had one of the coolest back-drops we have ever seen) immediately got it going! Opening with “Ode to LRC” which sounded as perfect as it possibly could. Early into the set it seems as if lead singer Ben Bridwell is either terribly bored with his songs while walking around singing on stage, or just has no clue what to do when not holding a guitar. They tossed in a few cover songs during the set, one which was a Kris Kristofferson song “Just The Other Side of Nowhere” that was perfect in the Greek Theater with a crowd that couldn’t help but not say a word during the song.

The set got rolling with “The Great Salt Lake” which makes FYM want to hit the baseball park every time it comes on, and smoke a cigarette while sliding into home plate. The song that everyone wanted to hear was obviously “Weed Party” when you come to the bay area and the doobies were lit up, and made the venue smell ripe as ever. The great thing about Band of Horses is that they can really swoon a crowd, and then bring them back up with a jam like “Weed Party”.

Right as Band of Horses were finishing up their set the guitarist got a bra tossed his way, only to find it after the song finished. Of course he had to bring it up, and have his Al Green moment since odds are likely that might have been a first for the man. Towards the end of the evening a concert goer snuck in a few too many glow sticks and started making them rain on to the stage. Ben Bridwell couldn’t help but toss a few back into the crowd. BOH finished up their set for the evening, and Ben Bridwell headed off stage, letting us know that it was “Our fake last song”.

Band of Horses came out for their encore, and there always has to be that guy that yells “Play The Funeral” at every show. Of course the guy got what he wanted, but had to wait until the last song of the evening to get it. “No One’s Gonna Love You” played during their encore, and the quote of the evening from a girl next to me “How beautiful was that?! Beautiful, just beautiful” she said as she might have had a few too many $8 beers of Coors Light. Closing the evening with “The Funeral” was perfect for these guys, and everyone couldn’t have been in a better spirit.

FYM ON THE LIST: VAMPIRE WEEKEND / BEACH HOUSE / THE VERY BEST @ GREEK THEATER, BERKELEY CALIFORNIA

Vampire Weekend, the greatest ever Californian band who are not from California, swept through Berkeley on Saturday night during what felt like a sort of victory lap of their giant Contra tour, and they brought along The Very Best and Beach House for the ride.

When the band first came through California back in April, they didn’t seem as loose and jubilant as they did in Berkeley on Saturday night. When the Brooklynites played Oakland’s Fox Theater on April 20th, Contra was still settling into people’s minds. This time around, Contra has become a clear hit and widely regarded as one of 2010’s best releases. They encouraged more crowd participation and even treated the crowd to their cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m Going Down”. More changes: gone was the giant backdrop of Contra’s infamously embattled cover art, replaced with a mysterious circular design filled “White Sky” lyrics that looks like it could have been some sort of easter egg from Lost. As both Vampire Weekend albums are filler-free, so are their concerts.

The band didn’t play one disappointing song, though slower jams like “Taxi Cab” and “I Think Ur a Contra” were sometimes hindered by the annoying conversations by equally annoying Berkeley kids sitting nearby. The setlist didn’t change much from April’s shows, but you can never heard some of the crowd pleasers enough, it seems, as songs like “A-Punk”, “Cousins”, and “Giving Up the Gun” got the pit moving and the people sitting up on the Greek’s stones swaying.

Back in 2008 when Vampire Weekend brought along YACHT to tour with them, jokes were made about how this band made up of rich kids from Columbia University were touring with a band whose name was shared with something their parents likely owned. Well, on this tour it’s the same story again but with Beach House.

The Baltimore dream pop duo, flanked by a full live band, performed cuts off their previous two albums, this year’s Teen Dream and 2008’s Devotion. Blissed-out highlights included the gorgeous Teen Dream pieces “Walk in the Park” and “Take Care”, which, along with the remainder of their set, were visually underscored by a vibrant light show. The crowd was very into Beach House, which was more than I was expecting due to the contrast between Beach House’s dreamy, hazy sound compared to Vampire Weekend’s firecracker energy.

And speaking of firecrackers and energy, the first artist of the night was The Very Best, straight from Lilongwe, Malawi in central-east Africa. Very Best singer Esau Mwamwaya fired up the crowd with the energy of a full band, which is remarkable as he was backed by one mere DJ playing mostly backing tracks. Mwamwaya’s infectious energy radiated not only from the beginning of his set to the closer “Warm Heart of Africa” (a longtime favorite here at FYM featuring Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig) but throughout the evening. The Very Best’s unique mix of electro-pop and African pop and rhythms was an obvious great compliment of Vampire Weekend’s now well-known “Upper West Side Soweto”.

The Very Best’s 2009 album Warm Heart of Africa is a solid multicultural musical representation of what I imagine can be a fun night out in Malawi, London, or anywhere else the group touched base in to make the album. Featuring the aforementioned clash of electronics, pop, and organic percussion, Warm heart of Africa was one of the most unique releases of last year that really felt like the start of a new movement.
